I changed my major in college seven times. Yep, seven times. But it never set me back any on graduation time because everything I switched to was in the same field, health and nutrition.
When it was finally said and done, I ended up with a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition with a coaching endorsement.
It wasn’t hard to stay in that field with all my “major switching” because health/nutrition/exercise/anatomy and all that jazz has always been a genuine interest of mine. I just couldn’t decide which route I wanted to go with it!
So, it has surprised some of the people in my closest circle that I would partner with a fast food company when I’m such a nutrition dork.
Well, let me explain.
My MOST FAVORITE teacher in college was a marathon runner, ironman triathlete, fitness competing guru. She was/is amazing, inspiring and encouraging in every way. She took her nutrition and exercise very seriously.
But, she was also a mom with a normal crazy mom schedule with shuffling kids to and fro, sport activities here and there, and school events on the calendar.
I remember sitting in one of her nutrition classes and her saying something to the effect of, “I am passionate about being healthy and taking care of my body, but I can still roll through the driveway and grab a big fat cheeseburger and get my kids a Happy Meal from time to time.”
You see, living healthy is a lifestyle, not a quick fix diet. She was saying that she exercises, eats right, and is a busy mom! So, drive-thru and fast food are a lifesaver sometimes! It’s all about moderation, healthy choices, and a lifestyle.
So kind of like her, I’m all about eating healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables, and clean eating. BUT I’m also all about being a mom and surviving! (Kind of like here when I wrote about needing GRACE for being LATE)
Just last week, I was grocery shopping with all of my boys and they were all hungry and I didn’t have any snacks with me (which I usually do for them). So I did the American Mom thing to do, and whipped through a McDonald’s drive through and got them some of their new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders for a snack to hold them over, while we were grocery shipping, until supper time. (Grocery shopping with hungry kids is a NIGHTMARE!)
They ate their
deep fried chicken strips for lunch and then came home to a balanced home cooked meal of grilled chicken, sautéed vegetables, and a salad.
Moderation and a healthy lifestyle.
I mean, I’m all about eating healthy and exercising, but if you put a cheesecake in front of me, I’m probably going to eat it!
So, the way we handle fast food in our house is definitely on a moderation basis. It isn’t what we eat every day, but we don’t stress out if a meal ends up being drive-thru on a busy day.
And even when that happens, fast food has come a long way and has several healthy options to choose from. One of my favorite fast food locations, with a lot of healthy options, is McDonald’s. My go-to healthy choice is their Southwest Chicken Salad – I even mentioned it in an article HERE..
Anyway, my whole point is—— You can still live a HEALTHY lifestyle and eat at McDonald’s. It’s all about the other 12383750234903 eating choices you make throughout a week.
So, with that being said here are my top 5 things to order at McDonald’s.
This drink isn’t low calorie or anything. But it is DELICIOUS and a treat! This is what my husband and I grabbed on the way home from the hospital last year when we were taking baby #4 home. OR when we go out on a date night, it is common practice for us to swing through a drive-thru and get one on the way home from our date. One time I even did a coffee bar for teachers and gave away Frappe Mocha’s and they loved them!
I have NO SHAME in saying this. McDonald’s breakfast is one of my favorite things when traveling! When we do early morning traveling, it is a given that a Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit will be in the plan! My preference is the Sausage McMuffin with Egg, but the rest of my family goes with the traditional Sausage Biscuit. Just like from this picture on one of our early morning Silver Dollar City family trips.
If you have followed me on social media at all, then you probably know that I love these things! They are low-calorie (only 200 calories) and great refresher after a run or on a hot summer day! (Or even now!) They do have a high sugar content, but as far as calories they are a MUCH better choice than a shake. (Even though I do love a good shake! Strawberry is my preference!) I even make my own mango smoothies at home.
Sam and I both love McDonald’s McCafe coffee. I get one regular coffee with 2 creams and he gets a regular with one cream. We actually even switched to buying the McCafe coffee for our personal use at home. Besides a regular cup of coffee, I’m a sucker for the Pumpkin Spice Latte! I love the cinnamon flavor and how it’s not too overwhelming with pumpkin. I also like the French Vanilla Cappuccino.
McDonald’s Chicken Snack Wrap
This is one of my go-to’s when I’m really busy and need a quick lunch when I’m by myself. I grab the Chicken Snack Wrap and a water through the drive-thru. It is small, yet the perfect size for a quick bite to eat when you don’t really want to have a full meal. It costs less than $2, and takes only a few minutes to swing by and get one, and then I’m off on my errands again.
So, yes I’m happy to partner with McDonald’s. I have met the owners and employees behind the scenes and have heard their stories. The owners that I have met personally are generous by supporting community events and passionate about helping families in any way they can. The employees that I have met and talked to are working hard to support their families or they are students working long hours putting themselves through school. There is a story behind everyone you meet, if we would all just take the time to listen.
