It’s Fall Y’all! I don’t know about you, but during this time of year, I want to spend all my time outside and doing fun things. Well, I really like doing fun things all year long. But, the fall is especially nice for hiking, picnicking and playing outside all day.
But, like you, I am in the “real world” where you have responsibilities, commitments and other “grown up adult” things that you have to do. So, time management is key in being able to fit in the fun during this time of year while also balancing all the other responsibilities that you have.
Sometimes it just gets hard and I feel like I have to have a catch-up day to get back on track. I know that there will always be something on the to-do list and I’ve gotten to a point to where I’m OKAY with having things not crossed off that list. (Well, kind of okay….)
Catch Up Day
But, it is still easy to get far enough behind that you do need a workday alone to somewhat catch up.
When I need one of these days, I head to a local McDonald’s and use their Wi-Fi to catch up.
I live rurally (at the very end of a dirt road), so let’s just say that my internet service is not always awesome. It’s good somedays, but not near as fast as the internet service I can get from using McDonald’s free Wi-Fi.
Usually, I head to the McDonald’s with a PlayPlace and let my kids play for a bit while I work on a few things. But this time, I wanted to try out the McDonald’s without the PlayPlace to see what the atmosphere was like there.
It was AMAZING!
I arranged to have some childcare for my four kiddos, so I could sneak in a couple of hours and be super-efficient! I work from home, so I usually am multi-tasking balancing work and homeschool, while getting things done. I don’t recommend that though! When you focus on something solely while working on it, the finished product is always better and can get done quicker. But, I know as moms, we don’t always have that choice. Multi-tasking is just part of that season of life.
I scheduled my work date with myself in the morning because I love the atmosphere of McDonald’s in the morning and their coffee. (Insert Random Confession: I love gas station snacks and McDonald’s breakfast on super early morning road trips.)
When I got there, I challenged myself to knock two big projects off my list before treating myself to any kind of McCafe drink.
As I settled in my spot with cushioned seats and a big window, I started looking around and noticed that there were two main groups of people there.
One group was a group of retired folks who were sitting and socializing over McDonald’s breakfast of Sausage Biscuits, and you could tell that this was a regular social date for them. For some reason, I was comforted by their laughter and camaraderie while I was working. I was there for 2 1/2 hours and they were there before I got there and were still there when I left – just visiting and having a good time. It made me want to call a friend up and just sit and drink coffee and chat the morning away! Better yet, I should’ve just joined in on their group. Haha!
The other group of people were there with, what seemed to be, the same goal as me. They were all sitting alone working from their computers.
Typically, I would say that it would be rude for everyone to just sit around staring at a screen in the digitally dependent age we live in. I tend to be more of the mindset that we need to put the screens away and have more face-to-face conversations.
But this setting didn’t bother me at all because as I looked around, everyone looked so focused and were working diligently on their projects. I wondered if any of them had the same goal as me. The goal was to work hard and be efficient so that when I was finished I could put the work away and spend my time with the ones I loved the most doing what was important to me. So, as we were all sitting working on our separate projects at McDonald’s, I was motivated by everyone else’s intentness and focus.
After I knocked a couple of things off my list, I counted it as a success and grabbed myself the seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte which is my favorite hot McCafe drink.
I only had about 20 minutes left before I needed to leave to go and pick up the kids, so I just sat in my comfortable cushion window seat sipping my latte, looking at the to-do list feeling pretty good about being able to go home and put the unfinished to-do list to the side so that I could invest in the people that mattered the most to me.
I was only at McDonald’s for 2 1/2 hours, but it is amazing what you can get done in 2 1/2 hours in a quiet atmosphere, with fast Wi-Fi and hot coffee.
I’ll definitely be going back the next time I need a catch-up day. (Or better yet— I might just go back and crash the retired folk social party and hang with them over breakfast!)
