Last week I mentioned in my random Friday Five that I would be sharing pictures of my boys room. So here it goes!
My sis-in-law, Abby, is pretty much amazing and knows that I am decorating challenged when it comes to making things look pulled together and themed. I can’t match anything. I have no vision. When I’m in a group of ladies who start talking about matching paint color with trim and drapes and light fixtures, I start looking for an out or a hole to crawl in. Not that I’m not interested, its just that to think of those concepts is so challenging for me and it makes my brain SPIN.
I’d much rather you show me three pictures out of a magazine and then let me pick which one I like.
I have an opinion. I just can’t come up with anything from scratch. So, those few rare times I do have a decorating idea, I get really excited and will probably post it all over the blog like I’m some kind of HGTV star. haha!
Side note- Even though I’m not great at decorating a house, I do love decorating a table! That is my thing 🙂
Anyway, back to the real story- the boys room. This all started when I would text my sis-in-law about everyday asking her a question. Finally, she just asked if I wanted her to just take over the room for me. YES!! YES!! YES!!! PLEASE!
So, there were no more texts from me and she just took over! Woo Hoo!
We took an afternoon and met halfway for a little shopping and some furniture shuffling.
Then after her hard work, their family took the three hour trip and traveled down to our area of the state one weekend with a trailer loaded with all of the treasures she re-did for the room.
It was like a real HGTV show reveal. She took our men and went to work in the room and I occupied all the kids. I didn’t know or see anything until the finished project was revealed. FUN! I felt like I needed a camera crew to walk around with me.
So without further ado- check out what she did for me!
Let me just add- I pretty much gave her no budget for this room. The budget I gave her to re-do everything was considerably low when you are talking room makeoer. She had to use everything I already had or use things she had on hand to make the room awesome.
Maps and Adventure Room
The theme was maps/adventure.
Before we started- we emptied everything out and I put those sweet little boys to work giving the room a good deep clean. Hopefully, their future ladies will thank me someday.
Here is a quick before/after picture of the room.
I love the knobs on the dresser. They are arrows and buck deer heads. The boys think they are so cool!
And check out the custom bookends that they made for us. LOVE!
But if I had to pick a favorite new addition to the room. It would have to be this customized chalkboard that Abby made me/the boys/us. She cut out every single one of those cedar discs and arranged them and glued them on some random metal thing she had to make a chalkboard. LOVE!!! It fits the boys perfectly!
Adventure Toy Box
So now check out that toy box. It used to be UGLY! But, she repainted it and customized it to make it awesome!
And every room needs some personalization, so each boy has a custom made wooden oar with their name on it hand painted with coordinating colors. Abby, and her family, custom made these by using some fancy saw to make the shapes.
And I’m a sucker for pennants. I think I had about four up in my house at one time once. OOPS!
Now check out this AWSOME picture hanger that she made us. I will be hanging pictures of the boys and fun mementos on the chicken wire with cute little clothespins. Isn’t this thing awesome??? Sheesh, just writing all this makes me get all excited again! I mean, she made all this stuff! I can barely wrap a present pretty without cussing, so there is no way I could do all of this!
Lil’ Man Cave
One of my boys requests were to be able to keep their basketball goal on the door. Abby obliged them and added a little homemade touch. The “Lil Man Cave” sign is my husband’s favorite addition.
Something I overlooked this time when putting a space together for the baby was to hang a mobile for him. Well, Abby MADE HIM this mobile from grapevine on their property and then she added all the finishing touches and details. HE LOVES IT! It is hanging above his changing table, and as I’m changing his diaper he just stares up at it and smiles and giggles. It’s PERFECT! She took the time to string all those beads and woodland creatures on this. WOW! That looks like some detailed, time consuming work to me!
Here is a picture of a little organizational set up in the boys room. They keep “treasures” also known to others as deer hooves, cow teeth, bones, acorns, and rocks in the raccoon container on the shelf. I guess it’s a boy thing. I love the details and finishing touches of the frame, lamp, and organization bins.
One of Jack’s favorite additions were the old books! He’s been carrying them around waiting for us to read them to him. He also LOVES the globe on top of the dresser. Kids are so funny.
Tent and Bear Rug
We can’t forget about the tent and the bear rug. Oh my goodness. These boys play in this tent and use this bear rug in their “games” all day. It is hilarious! They think they are big stuff with a tent in their room.
Just a side note- That small red rocking chair in the picture—- Do you see it? My great, great grandpa made that for my mom when she was a child. He made the seat from some kind of tree bark (or something like that). We love it!
I don’t want to leave out the custom made pillows for the boys beds. How cool!
I just love all the details and finishing touches to everything. Abby is really great at the details and pulling them all together!
And of course, baby got his on special part too. A custom painted changing table with coordinating baskets and new crib sheets.
I love how all the little details pull everything together. If you look at an above picture, you will find a little moose sitting on the edge of the top bunk bed. It’s a small detail, but the boys love it.
She also got Lane a little fox. He holds it while I change his diaper as he enjoys his mobile. It is so sweet.
The small details matter! (in life and everything- but since this post isn’t supposed to be philosophical, I’ll just leave it at that)
There is really only one more thing we need to do in the room.
We are going to do something with that corner to the right of the basketball goal.
Right now the two options are a cozy reading corner with pillows and bookshelves mounted on the wall or a pull down desk mounted to the wall.
We shall see! Not sure yet which route we are going to go with.
Thanks for sticking with me on this post and I hope you enjoyed all the pictures!
Thank you Abby for helping me! You are the best!
I only tell Abby about every day that she needs to start a blog, so I can read it and she can tell me what to do with the rest of my house!
Now my daughter is waiting for her aunt to re-do her room! hahahahah
